Debre Libanos & the Portuguese Bridge

Visit the Debre Libanos monastery, founded in the thirteenth century. Take a tour of the DebreLibanos church and take a short hike to the cave where St. Tekle Haymanot is said to have prayed for 29 years. See the amazing view of the Abay (Blue Nile) Gorge, see the rushing waterfalls, visit the Portuguese Bridge and see the Gelada baboons.

ITINERARY

Day Tour to Debre Libanos

We will pick you up and drop you at the lobby of your hotel or your place at 8:00 A.M
You will drive about 110 km to Debre Libanos. You will start a tour of the church and the museum. You will then take a short hike up to the cave church where St. Tekle Haymanot is said to have prayed for 29 years. Then you will drive to a location where you will have an impressive view of the Abay (Blue Nile) Gorge and take a short hike down to the Portuguese Bridge, the waterfall, and the home of the gelada baboons. There is a restaurant near the bridge where you can have lunch or you can bring your own food. You will return to Addis in the late afternoon. Women are required to wear scarves on their heads in the large church, so women might want to bring their own. If they do not have one then one will be provided by the church. You will have to remove your shoes to enter both churches. The hiking areas are steep in some places and have areas of rocky uneven ground. We recommend you bring an umbrella or jacket in case of rain. Hiking is optional and there are places to relax and enjoy the surroundings and views in case you do not want to hike.

Discover the Wonders of Merkato

Merkato, it’s the largest shopping area in Addis and some say the largest market in Africa. Stalls, shops, kiosks, malls, and street vendors sell food, drink, spices, incense, clothing, jewelry, music, movies, appliances, handicrafts, chat, and more. Visit the recycling market where someone’s garbage is transformed into a new and different product ready for its new life.

Excursion to Melka Kuntre, Tiya and Adadi Mariam

MelkaKuntre, Stone Age site (between 1.5 and 1.8 Million years old), contains many samples of Stone Age tools of the early Homo sapiens. The collections are results of the excavations of the last four decades. The samples are well exhibited in show rooms and there is very good scientific explanation about Stone Age tools in general and the site in particular.

You will drive about 83 km to you will visit the archeological sites of Tiya (ancient stelae field and UNESCO World Heritage site) remarkable for its large stone pillars, many of which bear some form of decoration.
In additional, we will take you to the village in Tiya to show you how they make Ensset (kocho) from the false banana tree one of the staple food and coffee ceremony if we have enough time.
Adadi Mariyam , also lies along this road and it is the only rock hewn church to exist as this region. The church is not carefully carved as the rock-hewn churches in Lalibela but it has a lot of similarities with most of them and the rock-hewn churches of Tigray.

– After the tour there will be time to relax and eat in the lovely picnic area. We will then head back to Addis. We will return before 8:00 p.m.
– We recommend you bring a hat or umbrella, sunscreen (if you need it), jacket, water, snacks, and a lunch. The walking paths are uneven and In addition, there are some biting ants, so consider this when you are getting dressed.
– Restaurant currently nowhere to purchase food BUT they started to sell drink at Born Free (though they are working on opening a restaurant which soon) so you have to bring your own.
