Historic Route

Day 1

Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar. On the way we will visit Debre Libanos Monastery and the Portuguese Bridge, the first bridge built in Ethiopia. We will also pass through the spectacular Blue Nile Gorge. Overnight in Bahir Dar.

Day 2

Bahir Dar. In the morning we will visit various Lake Tana monasteries by boat. In the afternoon we will visit the Tis Abay (Blue Nile) Falls. After a short hike we will enjoy the view over the falls for sunset. Overnight in Bahir Dar.

Day 3

Bahir Dar to Gondar. After a short drive to Gondar we will visit the Gondar Castle complex and Fasilidas bath. We will also see some of the unique churches in Gondar. Overnight in Gondar.

Day 4

Gondar to Axum. On the way to Axum we will see the spectacular and breathtaking landscape of the Semien mountains. Overnight in Axum.

Day 5

Axum. On this day we will see the historic city of Axum. We will visit the sites of the ancient Axumite Empire including the Queen of Sheba Bathes and King Bazen’s Tomb along with the ancient burial stele.

Day 6

Axum to Adigrat. On this day we will visit the ruins of Yeha, we will also stop to see the monastery at Debre Damo where the men can climb up to the top to see the monastery and spectacular views (sorry, women are not allowed to visit this religious site). We will overnight in Adigrat.

Day 7

Adigrat to Mekele. On this day we can see the fabulous churches built into the cliffs around the Tigray region focusing on the Gheralta cluster. From here we will continue to the city of Mekele for an overnight.

Day 8

Mekele to Lalibela. On the drive to Lalibela we will visit the Yemrehanna Kristos church. We will overnight in Lalibela.

Day 9

Lalibela. Our focus on this day will be the magnificent city of Lalibela. Lalibela has over 13 churches built out of solid rock roughly 1000 years ago by King Lalibela. Overnight in Lalibela.

Day 10

Lalibela to Dessie. Via Weldeya we will stop in Hayk to see the beautiful views over Lake Hayk and continue on to Dessie for the overnight.

Day 11

Dessie to Addis Ababa.
